早くも2025 年が終わろうとしています。そこで2025年の最後の締めくくりにもう一度、Acoya の原点にまつわるお話を簡単ですが書いてみます。

The year 2025 is already coming to a close. Time flyes so fast, so for this final column of the year, I would like to briefly share the origin stories of Acoya.

＜ジュエリーとは物語であり、その物語は繋がり続ける＞

私にとってジュエリーとはなにかをお伝えしたく思います。私にとってジュエリーとは物語であり、希望であり、自分を鼓舞し励ましてくれるものであります。自分がこの世界から消えてしまう時に、ある輝きを持って残るのものがあるとすれば、ジュエリーが美しいなあと思うのです。きっと同じ志を持つ人への優しさや勇気になる。服はあまりにも生々しく感じられる。ジュエリーは眺めていてもいいし、さらなる新たな物語を重ね、紡いでいけるものだと思うのです。私は何かそんなものがあこや真珠と共に作れたらと思いながら、acoya のジュエリーをデザインしています。

< Jewelry is a Story, Its Story Continues to Unfold>

I would like to share what jewelry means to me. To me, jewelry is a story, a hope and something that inspires and encourages me. When I vanish from this world, if anything of mine can remain with a quiet radience, it would be jewelry I found truly beautiful. That would be a source of kindness and courage for thouse who share the same aspirations. Clothes feel far too raw. Jewelry, however, is something you can simply gaze upon, yet it is also something that can be layered with meaning, weaving new stories over time. I design jewelry for acoya, I often wonder whether I can create pieces like that with Akoya pearls.

＜生と死を意味する虹色真珠＞

古代日本では丸い形つまり’たま’は魂の形や、魂を入れる入れ物と考えられていました。万葉集などにおいて真珠は’しらたま’とよばれ、魂や美しい人を意味するものでもありました。
あこや真珠のもっとも驚くことは、人が手を加えなくとも元々から七色の美しい輝きを持っているところです。またその輝きは生命であるということ。古代から人は自ら輝く七色の真珠の美しさに憧れ、自分の魂もそうでありたいとねがったのではないでしょうか。
そして人が自然と身近であったころ、私たちもまたこの地球のただ一つの命に過ぎないということを理解していたに違いありません。その時に見た、蝶が蛹から美しい羽を広げて飛びかう光景、蛇の激しい求愛と美しい脱皮、植物や花々の美しい色彩と構造、母なる海の大いなる偉大さなど様々な自分たちを取り巻く環境や生き物に、願いや希望を持ち自分たちを純粋に重ねた光景が眼に浮かびます。

< Iridescent Pearls that Signify Life and Death>

In anciant Japan, the round shape—that is,'tama'—was considered the form of the soul or vessel containing it. In works such as the Man'yōshū, pearls were called 'Shiratama', signifying both the soul and beautiful people. 
The most surprising thing about Akoya pearls is that they possess a beautiful iridescent luster originally, without human intervention.
Moreover, that lustre represents life itself. Since anciant times, people have longed for the beauty of these naturally radiant, iridescent pearls, wishing their own souls could be like that too.
Humans once lived in close harmony with nature; we understood that we were only one life among countless others on this Earth. The sight that comes to mind is one where we, with pure hearts, projected our own hopes and wishes onto the diverse environment and creatures surrounding us: the spectacle of butterflies unfurling their beautiful wings from chrysalis and taking flight; snakes shedding their skins in fierce and graceful renewal; the exquisite colors and forms of plants and flowers; the overwhelming grandeur of the Mother Sea. We projected our pure selves onto the diverse environment and creatures surrounding us, imbuing them with our own hopes and aspirations.

＜装飾とは? ＞

装飾の最初の始まりは、この自然界の美しいものや私たちにない力をもつものになりたいと憧れたことから始まったと考えます。権力、富を示すツールではなかったと思います。
そして、いずれは朽ち果てる命。なん万年の時がたった今でも、いかに科学が発達しようとも、これは永遠に変わらないことだと思います。ここから様々な神話や物語は生まれています。その一つは白珠と呼ばれた真珠であり、この美しさに永遠の命を託したのでしょう。

<What is Decoration?>

I believe decoration first began with a longing to become like the beautiful things or to possess powers beyond our own in this natural world. I do not think it was a tool to display power or wealth. And yet, life is destined to decay and perish. Even now, after tens of thousands of years have passed, and however much science may advance, I believe this will remain eternally unchanged. From here, various myths and tales have emerged. Among them is the tale of the shiratama—a pearl in which people entrusted eternal life.

＜ acoya アニマシリーズ＞

これらの観点からacoya は命の輝きである真珠とともに、かつて人間の憧れた生き物の物語を新たに作りたいと考えました。忘れ去られた繋がりや自然に生きるものたちへの憧れを蘇らせ、自然と人が共に生きる世界の物語を取り戻したいと考えたのです。このシリーズの名前を今考えているところであります。おそらく’ Chi' とするかもしれません。
このシリーズがサーペンタインパールブレスレットであり、真珠扇子なのです。一年に一つはこのシリーズを発表しようと考えています。長くなるので、それぞれの作品のお話はぜひ、Acoya インスタでご覧ください。

< Acoya Anima Series>

From this perspective, Acoya wished to craft the tale of creatures once longed for by humankind, alongside the very sparkle of life. I wished to revive forgotten connections and a yearning for creatures living in harmony with nature, to reclaim the story of a world where nature and people live together. I am currently considering the name for this series,
eventually be called “Chi.” This series is the 'Serpentine Pearls Bracelet' and the 'Pearl Fan'. intend to release one piece from this series each year. As these works each carry layered stories, I do hope you'll check the story behind each piece on acoya's Instagram.
