Omura Bay, also known as the Koto Sea Nagasaki Prefecture. The historical origins of Akoya pearls can be traced back to Kyushu, where many fossils have been found.
Akoya pearls already existed in Omura Bay more than 1,300 years ago, and the Hizen Province Fudoki (Records of the Land of Hizen) mentions Akoya pearl oysters. Mr. Matsuda has continued this tradition of cultivating pearls in Omura
Bay since his father’s time. Acoya’s pearls are created with love and a lot of care by Mr. Matsuda.

The short film shows the work of Mr Matsuda of Matsuda Cultured Pearls, who makes Acoya pearls in Nagasaki’s Omura Bay, also known as the Koto Sea. The Akoya pearls are in the middle of the most important part of the process,
which is known as the implanting of nucleus beads (shell core) into mother oysters. The mist of the rain covering the Koto Sea is the very colour of pearls.

On the night of the new moon, Chitose Ochi, director of Acoya, invites you to step into the luminous world of pearls, accompanied by a drink with a pearl settled carefully, like reflecting the moon, at the bottom of a glass.

This time, we will show a short film about the birth of Akoya pearls in Omura Bay, Nagasaki, with the collaboration of the Dutch documentary director, Willmieck. The film captures the ethereal beauty of the sea and the craftsmanship of Mr. Matsuda of Matsuda Cultured Pearls.
After the screening, I will share the stories behind each special piece and talk with you.
